Maximizing NIST’s Power Resilience for Uninterrupted Operations

Silicon Power has installed an Innova STS Sub-cycle Transfer Switch at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) effectively maximizing NIST’s power resilience for uninterrupted operations at its centre in Boulder, CO, USA. NIST jointly operates research
organizations in four locations explicitly established to promote cross-disciplinary collaborations which accelerate research results.

The Innova STS monitors the power quality of two distinct and redundant feeders to the NIST facility in Colorado, and provides sub-cycle transfer from the utility preferred source to the utility alternate source in the event of a momentary interruption or
disruption in power quality. This effectively protects NIST’s critical systems and keeps uninterrupted operations in the event of a disturbance.

“We are excited to be part of a more intelligent and resilient electric grid solution connecting critical facilities with utilities,” said Perry Schugart, Sr. Vice President, Marketing and Business Development, Silicon Power. “Our Innova STS quickly transfers power (in less than a quarter cycle) from multiple feeds to the load when the power supporting the load fails or has insufficient power quality. Mechanical transfer switches are too slow for many power sensitive loads.”

Silicon Power Corporation is a globally-recognised technology developer and solutions provider in the design, development, testing and manufacturing of high-power semiconductor devices and utilityapplicable systems.

Silicon Power Corporation – Power Resilience for Maximum Uptime

Businesses from across commercial, financial, and industrial backgrounds are increasing their number of mission-critical applications to reduce risk and remain competitive. But their aspirations are facing an unwelcome adversary as these applications experience increasing power failure events, resulting in facility downtime and loss of business value.

Although businesses are investing heavily on maintaining redundant power lines and using an automatic transfer switch to ensure consistent power supply, these relatively slow switches can be detrimental to facility uptime. Looking under the hood, there are two major forces
at play. On one side, there are utilities that are increasingly using distributed energy systems such as wind, solar, and energy storage as part of their power portfolio. These distributed energy systems, however, fail to provide the rotational inertia of conventional generation, which plays a crucial role in helping the grid ride-through various faults. On the other side, the nature of the missioncritical loads is changing rapidly.
